Recruitment

We are currently recruiting at least one native level English speaking full-time in-house translator (Job 1), and at least one full- or part-time in-house checker (Job 2) to work in our office (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo) starting May/June 2015. The ideal candidates will enjoy working as part of a small in-house team specializing in patent translations (mainly mechanical, electrical, and software patents, but including some chemical patents). Personal development is fast due to our small in-house company atmosphere and the way in which we check each other's translations, and share advice/feedback. The in-house checker role might suit a native Japanese speaking E>J patent translator who seeks to improve their J>E skills by working closely with native English speaking translators.

Job 1: In-house Japanese-to-English Patent Translator
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.
Requirements:
Technical background, with experience or interest in patent translation.
Native (or near-native) level English, and excellent Japanese reading ability (equivalent to JPLT level 1 or above).
Role: Translation and checking of patent specifications (ratio of translation to checking will depend on skills, experience, and subject matter).
Pay: Monthly salary will depend on experience and demonstrable ability. Bi-annual bonus. We may be able to assist with visa application and relocation for exceptional candidates.

Job 2: In-house Japanese-to-English Patent Translation Checker
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, or part-time 2 to 3 days per week.
Requirements:
Experience in patent translation/ patent translation checking, or a good grasp of technical Japanese in at least one field, and a willingness to develop expertise in unfamiliar fields.
Good concentration and an eye for detail.
High level technical English (but not necessarily native level). Non-Japanese candidates should have excellent Japanese reading ability (equivalent to JPLT level 1 or above).
Role: Detailed word-for-word checking of patent specification translations. You will identify any omissions or errors in the translations and discuss them directly with the translator. Through the checking process, and with feedback from our translators, you will quickly become very familiar with the requirements for patent translations, and with technologies in several fields.
Pay: Hourly wage - depending on experience and aptitude.

If you are interested applying for one of the above vacancies then please send an up-to-date resume (in English and/or Japanese) as soon as possible to email, making sure the following information is included: job applied for, name, email address, phone number, current location (please state ward/city if resident in Tokyo), days available to work (for part-time checker), level of English, level of Japanese reading, any prior experience in patent translation or checking, and your technical fields.
